Bob Wayland Memorial Park & Speelhoffer Park

Bob Wayland Memorial Park is a scenic 100 acre area in Upper Frederick Township purchased with the assistance of the Montgomery County Open Space Program. Bob Wayland Park is undergoing continuous improvements thanks to the assistance of township resources, grant money, local Boy Scout troops, volunteers and the Upper Frederick Park Board. Enhancements recently made as a part of local Eagle Scout projects include a fence bordering Fagleysville Road and a series of plaques illustrating and providing information on native plants and animals. Other Park amenities include a 1/2 mile millings trail which has recently been expanded deeper into the park, and a one acre plot of milkweed planted in an effort to attract monarch butterflies back to the area.

5K/10K Swamp Creek Stomp

Bob Wayland Memorial Park is also home to the one of the most significant township events and fundraisers for our park and recreation projects, the 5K/10K Swamp Creek Stomp. Sponsored in part by local businesses, and going on its fifth year in 2017, the race, which takes place the first Saturday of April, has attracted 200+ runners from near and far to a trail which serpentines through open fields, woodland and the Swamp Creek itself to provide a challenging yet fun race to the muddy finish. The race takes advantage of the latest technology by using chip timing to provide the runners with their computerized results immediately after crossing the finish line. Trophies for all-round men’s and women’s 5K and 10K winners and medals for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in many age categories are awarded. A free Kid’s Fun Run helps to finish out this yearly event.

Get Set, Go! Contest

In the summer of 2016, the Park Board entered the Bob Wayland Memorial Park into the annual Pottstown Area Health and Wellness Foundation’s On Your Park, Get Set, Go! Contest. With the help of many, many residents and friends, the Park won the first place prize of a $5,000 Recreation Grant on its first attempt by having the most residents collectively visit and cast the most number of votes throughout the region’s participating parks, a second place prize of a $2,500 Recreation Grant for attracting the most residents and visitors to our park via votes and selfies, and a bonus $1,000 Recreation Grant for having 50+ residents visit and vote at least 2 times at participating parks during the month of July. To kick off the event, the township hosted a bike and outdoor movie night at the park, complete with popcorn and ice cream. The Park Board is planning on entering the 2017 contest to win even more grant money for our Parks, as well as another outdoor movie night this summer, so stay tuned for details which will be coming out soon!

The prize money won in the On Your Park, Get Set, Go contest, along with a $ 40,000 grant recently awarded to the township by the PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), is being used to install a dog park on the connecting 7 acre Speelhoffer Park located on Colonial Road, which is due to begin construction in the Spring of 2017. A dozen bare root trees – purchased at a significant discount as part of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society Tree Tenders program- were planted by the Park Board in the Spring of 2016 to kick-off the dog park project.
